WHAT IS BELLY DANCE ??
It is an ancient expression, based on social dances native to North Africa, Asia and the Middle East, dating back over a thousand years.
The theatrical version, called Raqs Sharqi, (dance of the East) in Arabic, also known as Oriental Dance is performed by both male and female professional dancers and is one of the most popular versions in the world today.
Performed by people of all ages during festive occasions, such as weddings, and other social gatherings for fun and celebration, boys and girls learn the dance at an early age in its native lands. As with many social dances, it is learned informally through observation and imitation of elders during family and community celebrations, as well as during informal gatherings with friends. Today, these ancient dances as well as the folkloric styles are taught in classes offered throughout the world, and skilled dancers are able to share the knowledge that has been passed down from the indigenous peoples who created them.
America saw its first belly dance performance during the centennial celebration in Philadelphia in 1876. However, it was not until the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, that it gained national attention. Now, belly dance is recognized and taught the around the world, enjoyed by many as a performance art as well as for exercise.
